NK2 Meeting: "Chemical storage of renewable hydrogen in CO2-neutral fuels - potentials, raw materials, perspectives"

On 08.10.2020 the NK2 network met in Beckum. The meeting focused on chemical storage of renewable hydrogen in CO2-neutral fuels. The event took place in "hybrid" form, meaning with presence and online participation. Beside the political classification of the topic by Dr. Joachim Hugo from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), different production routes of CO2-neutral fuels were presented by Dr. Franziska Müller-Langer (German Biomass Research Center, DBFZ), Dr. Jens Baumgartner (Sunfire), Prof. Bernd Meyer (Fraunhofer IMWS & IEC, TU Bergakademie Freiberg) and Dr. Peter Seifert (IEC, TU Bergakademie Freiberg).

Possible applications, efficiencies and market potentials were exchanged and discussed between the participants. In addition, Dr. Wolfgang Seifert, Managing Director of KRONOSPAN, provided insights into supply of wood waste through recycling as well as potential business models for wood-based CO2-neutral waste products. The highlight of the event was the subsequent Technical Tour in the Ecowest waste management center in Ennigerloh, where RECENSO/ CARBOLIQ's (host of the meeting) CTC pilot plant is located. The NK2 participants got an insight into the CTC process, through which a variety of feedstocks (e.g. waste biomass from agriculture or mixed plastic waste) are converted into liquid and universally usable hydrocarbon mixtures.
